This 15th-century castle, built by the powerful Sforza family, now houses museums and borders Milan’s favorite city park – a perfect mix of history and relaxation.
Full description: Castello Sforzesco is a formidable brick fortress that harkens back to Milan’s Renaissance glory. Built in the 15th century by Duke Francesco Sforza on the remains of a 14th-century fortification, the castle was later expanded into one of the largest citadels in Europe. Today it stands restored as a cultural treasure: its halls and courtyards contain several museums and art collections, from ancient sculptures and musical instruments to the Rondanini Pietà – Michelangelo’s final sculpture. Even if you don’t venture into the exhibits, wandering the castle’s huge courtyard and seeing its mighty towers up close is impressive (and free). The central Filarete Tower at the entrance, with its distinctive clock face, is a Milan landmark in itself.
Right behind the castle stretches Parco Sempione, Milan’s sprawling central park. Locals and visitors alike relax on its lawns and pathways, with the castle on one end and the triumphal Arch of Peace on the other. You can picnic, rent a bike, or simply enjoy views of the castle walls from the greenery. From Hotel Aurelia, reach Sforza Castle by a quick metro trip (Line M3 or M2 to “Cadorna” or “Lanza”) or about 20 minutes by taxi. It’s also a pleasant walk from the Duomo area via Via Dante. Visiting in the daytime is best for museum hours, but the castle grounds (and park) are open into the evening. Combining history and leisure, Sforza Castle and Sempione Park give you a balanced outing – explore some of Milan’s richest history, then unwind under the trees as Milanese families do.
